Ubuntu Linux, Day 7: Lessons from the Unity Trenches

Tony 首先回顧了一下他跟 Unity 奮戰的經過：一開始在 MS Windows 上面用 Wubi 安裝 Ubuntu Linux ，沒辦法用 Unity ；安裝 Ubuntu Linux 在 USB 外接硬碟，還是沒辦法用 Unity ；最後把它裝在一個硬碟分割區(partition)，終於偵測到 Nvidia 顯示卡，能夠安裝 Unity 了，但是卻無法外接螢幕（只能用筆電的螢幕）。不過網友有留言告訴他如何在前兩種方式安裝 Nvidia 驅動程式，以及最後一種安裝方式如何設定外接螢幕。

不過呢，按照網友建議的方式， Wubi 進入 Ubuntu 之後選 System -- Administration -- Additional Drivers，裝好驅動程式重新開機，這下 Wubi 的 Ubuntu 不能用了，每次進去只會閃一下，就回到 Ubuntu boot loader 。

Tony 決定改試試看最後一個，也就是安裝在硬碟分割區的，看看能不能把外接螢幕設定成功。最後他找到了 X Server Display Configuration ，啟用外接螢幕，選 TwinView ，並且設為 Clone ，萬事美好，他蓋上筆電螢幕，準備把筆電塞回桌下（看來他是用外接螢幕鍵盤滑鼠的方式在使用這台筆電）的時候……

Ubuntu 休眠了（休眠了休眠了休眠了……）

後來他在電源管理只找到休眠、關機、黑螢幕(Sleep, Shut Down, or Blank Screen)三個選項，最後他只好把不要把螢幕蓋上。喔，然後每次重新開機之後就要再設定一次外接螢幕……

PowerOp：今天中午剛好在樓下遇到 Canonical Taiwan 的工程師（姑隱其名），聊到 Unity ，他個人意見也是覺得 Unity 還不夠成熟。另外，他們還在徵人喔，原本在46樓D室已經坐不下了，最近把隔壁46C也租下來，裝潢中…「（台北辦公室）快三十人了耶」，他說。

另外，我們還講到一位已經不太「菜」的新進員工，這位已經是社群老鳥的員工，不知為何對於他來 Canonical 工作非常低調，已經進來有兩三個月了吧，還有很多社群朋友不知道他進了C社，所以我們在這裡幫高調！

最後，補上原文底下我最心有慼慼焉的留言，的確，用了 Unity ，很多東西都變成 kinda (kind of) work （大致會動），從前那個 「Linux 裝起來，一堆週邊無法驅動」的惡夢，難道又回來了？希望 Unity 在提供新的介面之餘，能夠儘快把各方面的問題修好，請加油！

Yeah I deal with this stuff all the time in Ubuntu.

Multiple monitors kinda work, if you can ignore the annoying stuff like the invisible dead space padding mismatched sizes, or what you have encountered here...

Audio kinda works if you're OK with randomly losing audio, or with not being able to share access to audio devices with other users of your computer...

Network Manager kinda works if you don't mind restarting it or logging out and back in, every time you change something...

Unity kinda works if you use the icons at the top as decorations and not something you need to click on (I have to restart with 'unity --replace' or I can't use them) and the menu bar is always mismatching the size of my second monitor...

etc. etc.

I still prefer Linux, because I know how to get around all this stuff. But I think I have lost track of how many little "maneuvers" I have to make just to use the system.
