近日有關 GPT-3 的一個相當令人注目的消息是微軟獨家取得了 GPT-3 的商用執照。我們先來看看微軟的 Kevin Scott （執行副總及技術長）對這件事的說法（註一）：

我們將此事（獨家取得 GPT-3 商用執照）視為擴展 Azure AI 平台的好機會，使得：
-- AI 技術更能為普羅大眾所應用
-- 協助產生新的產品、服務、及用戶體驗
-- 讓 GPT-3 這種規模超大的模型，產生更多的正面影響

我們希望這個 AI 平台能夠讓每一個人使用，包括研究人員、企業家、AI 控、公司行號等，協助他們實踐其雄心壯志！

OpenAI 仍將持續提供今年六月份所發表的 Azure-hosted API，而微軟會盡力將 GPT-3 的能力整合入我們的產品、服務及體驗裏，以嘉惠微軟的客戶。

OpenAI will continue to offer GPT-3 and other powerful models via its own Azure-hosted API, launched in June. While we’ll be hard at work utilizing the capabilities of GPT-3 in our own products, services and experiences to benefit our customers, ...

很標準的企業高階主管的文宣。但其中透露著兩個訊息，其一：目前 OpenAI 所提供的 GPT-3 API 服務會持續一陣子，所謂的獨家，應是指除了 OpenAI 自己以外的獨家；其二：微軟即將推出 GPT-3 相關服務。依照過去的經驗，微軟會提供一段免費的時間給使用 Azure 新服務的客戶，老頭很期待能夠自己試試 GPT-3，讓我們拭目以待吧！

再來看看 OpenAI 怎麼來闡釋這件事情（註二）：

OpenAI 同意微軟於其產品及服務中使用 GPT-3，這個交易不影響 OpenAI 目前所提供的 GPT-3 API 服務，現在及未來的使用者仍能持續使用。

OpenAI has agreed to license GPT-3 to Microsoft for their own products and services. The deal has no impact on continued access to the GPT-3 model through OpenAI’s API, and existing and future users of it will continue building applications with our API as usual.

目前，此 API 仍舊是有限的 beta 版本，給予 OpenAI 及其研究單位夥伴們探討這些強大的語言模型的能力及其限制，...
Today, the API remains in a limited beta as OpenAI and academic partners test and assess the capabilities and limitations of these powerful language models. ...

首先 OpenAI 並沒有強調「獨家 (Exclusive)」這個字詞，但是從微軟的大張旗鼓的宣傳上來看（幾乎所有中外媒體都引用了「獨家」這個概念），給微軟獨家應該是事實。對於目前 API beta 版的試用服務，看來 OpenAI 在短期內仍將持續提供。老頭試著到其網站上去註冊 waitlist，可以成功註冊，只是不知道要等多久才能獲准使用！

OpenAI 的共同創辧人之一的馬斯克，則對此一事件表達負面的看法，他在推特上說道「這與開放的概念背道而馳，OpenAI 看來已經被微軟俘虜」。

This does seem like the opposite of open. OpenAI is essentially captured by Microsoft.

從這個事件上，老頭認為：

• 微軟對 OpenAI 的影響力會日益增加，未來有一天如果聽到其被微軟併購，也不會是令人意外的發展。
• 經由這個獨家合約，OpenAI 會得到微軟更多財務及算力上的支援，很快的 GPT-4 就會面世了！
