聖經上的伊甸園，這是很美的神話故事，上帝花了六天的時間創造世上萬物，第7天休息，

然後接著用泥土做了亞當，吩咐他不要吃善惡樹上的果子(這點挺讓人有多種想法，人之初，無法分善惡?有了善惡之分，就逐出伊甸園)。上帝用亞當的肋骨做了Eve(為什麼會翻譯成夏娃?)，蛇引誘夏娃吃禁果，然後和夏當雙雙被逐出伊甸園。

帶著點悲劇色彩的神話故事，總是預告著美好的生活總是短暫，但讓人一輩子懷念。

Stallman先生的伊甸園，無疑就是AI Lab in MIT.

在他的2.0版傳記中，提到

I may have done a little bit more living at the lab than
most people, because every year or two for some reason
or other I’d have no apartment and I would spend a few
months living at the lab. And I’ve always found it very
comfortable, as well as nice and cool in the summer. But
it was not at all uncommon to find people falling asleep at
the lab, again because of their enthusiasm; you stay up as
long as you possibly can hacking, because you just don’t
want to stop. And then when you’re completely exhausted,
you climb over to the nearest soft horizontal surface. A
very informal atmosphere.

每隔一或兩年，他會因各種原因沒有公寓住，因些他會在實驗室裏住上幾個月，他比一般研究生住實驗室的時間還長，

這裏很舒服，隨時都看得到有人在睡，因為大家太努力了，為了黑一個興趣不睡，就是停不下來，到耗盡精力，就近找個軟的平面睡一下，非常不正經的氣氛。

The lab’s home-like atmosphere could be a problem at times. What
some saw as a dorm, others viewed as an electronic opium den.

這像家的氣氛，有人覺得像宿舍，有人覺得像電子鴉片館。

有人用computer bum，電腦游民形容他們。

Their rumpled clothes, their unwashed
hair and unshaved faces, and their uncombed hair all testify that they
are oblivious to their bodies and to the world in which they move

不洗澡，不換衣，不梳頭...等。

Perhaps the most enjoyable emotion, however, was the sense of
personal fulfillment. When it came to hacking, Stallman was a natural.
A childhood’s worth of late-night study sessions gave him the ability
to work long hours with little sleep.

像個小孩子般的學習。

It was in a hacker’s best interest to
improve the lab’s software infrastructure, and one of Stallman’s biggest
pet projects during this period was the lab’s editor program TECO.

做黑客最有趣的事就是改良實驗室裏的軟體，他最喜歡的專案就是一個名為 TECO的編輯器。

在那個沒有WYSIWYG 編輯器的年代裏，透過大量黑客弟兄對TECO的改良，大家是無私且相互合作，

在這個過程中，讓Stallman大受感動。這是他心目中的伊甸園該有的樣子。大家徹底不眠的研究改善，互相切磋讓TECO更好。

Looking over another hacker’s
shoulder while he worked was a common activity at the AI Lab. Stall-
man, the TECO maintainer at the lab, deemed Steele’s work “inter-
esting” and quickly set off to complete it.

做的有趣事，馬上開始著手去完善它。

Steele是一個有名的計算機科學家，同時是個知名的黑客。

也許是這個令Stallman難忘的過往經驗，多年後，他推出eamcs這個延展性超強的編輯器，做為自由軟體運動的第一個專案。
